Are you looking for a new position? Are you concerned that your present title may limit the type of job you can get? You may be considering altering, adjusting, or even altering it to make yourself more marketable.
However, you should use caution when doing so. Otherwise, a recruiting manager can call your current employer to check your job title and dates of employment, only to be caught off guard. Instead, if you're worried about how your job title may affect your search, consider changing it somewhat. For example, if your title is "office assistant," but you actually run the office down to the smallest detail, you don't want that junior position to sabotage your career goals. So, what are your options? Consider something along the lines of resume: XYZ Company, Any City, USA Risk Management Team, Sept. 2017 – Present. Then, in the bullets below, be sure to highlight your achievements. This involves putting numbers to them, such as "negotiated a new deal with an office supply provider that saved the firm 10% on future orders." According to Resume Building, these are the types of information that a hiring manager will notice more than a job title. If you are offered an interview, you can learn more about your position at the organization. So be prepared to tout all you've accomplished — and all you're capable of doing – to the recruiting manager. Don't, however, completely modify your title. If you are not the “office manager” but claim to be on your CV, one phone call from the hiring manager might derail your entire job quest. Not only that, but you'll appear dishonest and be eliminated from consideration for any future prospects. Also, if you haven't begun your job hunt but want to make a change soon and have the experience to occupy the next job title, ask your supervisor for a promotion.
